Reflective Log

Important dates in our assignment:

It is important to mention that throughout the whole assignment we informally spoke through our Whats app group chat and had one to one progress updates with one another to help us all stay on track and reach the deadline.

17.11.18
As a group, this was the first date that we actually made some crucial group decisions. We decided which practitioners we were all going to focus on and agreed which layout and design we would follow in out individual and group magazines.

30.11.18
This was when we came together to discuss our individual progress so far. This helped us gauge everyone's progress and how far we were from finishing.

6.12.18
This was when we decided whose design we were gong to follow as a template. We decided on mine as it followed the main codes and conventions and was overall the most aesthetically pleasing.

13.12.18
This was the day before we had to hand in the assignment.  We cam together to put all our designs into one coherent design. We ensured throughout the whole assignment that we stayed professional and respectful of each other.

Research:

I am quite happy with how my research turned out. I did actually found this part of the assignment really difficult. The main reason being was because I chose a graphic designer who didn’t have a lot written about her online. Mainly being because she was famous in around the 1930’s so her work hasn’t been as recognised as more recent designers. In reflection, I should have researched Cipe Pinleles a bit further before choosing her to make the research element of my article a lot easier. However, the reason I chose her was because I was instantly inspired but her work and fell in love with it so I feel it was more important I essentially ‘followed my heart not my head’. I also found that annotating a magazine cover was very important. It made it easier to pin point all the main codes and conventions of a front cover. I didn’t stick to a traditional magazine cover but I did keep some elements, the main one being the bold, black title in a serif font to stick with the conventions of a magazine and more specifically Cipe Pineles’ work and magazine covers.

Pre- Production:

This part was vital for me. It was where I planned all my work both individually and with my group. The Whatsapp group chat was really important for us and I felt we found it easier to communicate this way. In reflection, I feel that in class I lead the group but in making group decisions and communicating on the group chat, I think Harry took more of the responsibility. I think the main thing that helped me in pre- production was making a mood board. I did this in my last assignment and found that it really helped as a reference for whenever I had a creative block. I felt this was more even more effective this time round. I really struggled to get my ideas on the page so the mood board helped a lot.

Production:

For me this was the hardest part of the whole assignment. I really struggled to get my head around InDesign. It was something I had never used before and was quite different to Photoshop so I had to learn a whole new skill set to produce my magazine. Once I figured out how it worked and I got my head round it, I actually really enjoyed using InDesign. In terms of the group work, I think this was honestly my least favourite part of the whole assignment. I very much enjoy working individually, tackling obstacles myself and taking credit and receiving praise for my own work. So overall, I feel that the group element of the assignment was the most difficult thing I had to overcome.

Final Products:

I am really happy with how my final product turned out. I added a page turn/curl on my final design to make it interactive. I followed the dusty pink and bold black font for the titles theme. I wrote my articles in a simple typeface and made them grey so it wasn't to harsh and was more elegant. My titles were in the typeface Bodoni MT and my articles were all written in Candara. Like I mentioned, I am really happy with how my magazine turned out. I would have ideally like to have produced another double page spread but I simply didn't have enough content on my designer to produce another double page spread.

I am very aware that there are not weekly or even daily entries into my reflective log as there should be. This is mainly down to the fact that we didn't stick to the scheme of work in the assignment brief and jumped from topic to topic without any coherence in the teaching. For the next project, I will try and update the blog at least by the end of each week, given that we are have more time and guidance towards the reflective log.

Comments after peer assessment:

My feedback was quite helpful. Overall, it was very positive. The main feedback was about the typeface used. I needed to have used one consistent font style and size to keep a clear theme. I was already aware of this but I couldn't change it after it had been handed in. In reflection, I want to make sure that next time I have made all necessary changes well in advance of the deadline to avoid this stress repeating itself.
