Pre-Production

MOOD BOARD:

My mood board consists of different magazine covers and graphic designs made by Cipe Pineles. I chose Pineles as I loved her authentic and vintage style and the colour schemes are quite muted and subtle which I think add to making the elegant magazine I want to make. I am going to use Pineles’ style and carry it forward onto a more modern platform and aid new and old styles combining.

Planning our group magazine:

As a group we discuss what design we were going to follow. We discussed the type face, colour schemes, targets audiences and things such as the columns and margins.etc. This was extremely useful when making our individual designs as we could try and make them follow the same theme so when we put it together as a group, we could try our best to make a coherent final product.

Planning in our group:

As a group we decided the best way to make group decisions was to make a Whats App group chat. This was really useful as we could make decisions and work on them in our own time.
This was vital for our group as we found it a lot easier to communicate this way. As you can see from the group chat we also tried to stay on topic at all times to make sure we could get that final product that we were aiming for.

InDesign practice:

We used InDesign CC 2018 to produce our magazines. I had neber used InDesign before and it was very different to Photoshop so I had to learn a whole new skill set to produce a final product that I could be proud of.

Styles:

We practiced how to create styles on InDesign. We learnt how to create character styles, object styles and paragraph styles. These included changing the colour of the writing, making the first letter of the article bigger and applying a text wrap to an image. I found this lesson really useful as I used these techniques in my work and they helped me produce a professional looking magazine.

Making a draft magazine:

This was my first draft magazine. I only added text to the first page the rest wer just images. I was mainly just trying to figure out the orientation and layout fro my magazine. I decided to make a landscape magazine in the end as portrait didn't look as good.

Contents Page:

When trying to design and create my contents page, I had to consider the fact that this would be one of the first things the consumer will look at so it had to be engaging and fit the theme of my magazine. I wanted my magazine to have an 'old school meets new school', vintage theme. The reason for this was because I wanted to make a very traditional and vintage magazine but when I read the brief and told my teacher, the general consensus was that I had to take a more modern approach to my magazine. These were my first initial ideas.

I decided to keep the general theme of the contents page in my final design. However, I changed the alternating colours from black and red to black and peach. I also changed the arrangement of the images and the colour of the font. Essentially wherever there was red writing, I changed it to peach. I also added a background colour which is a dusty pink colour and make it slightly less opaque. I didn't keep the image page the same. I changed it and added the magazine title and tagline, as well as adding some different images. This is my new title and contents page. The main reason for these changes were generally just experimenting to find what looked the best, which colours complimented one another well and what arrangement matched my theme and style of Cipe Pineles.

I am really happy with how it turned out. It set the theme for the rest of my magazine and the colour scheme emphasises the vintage, 'old school meets new school' theme I was going for.

First draft page:

This was my first draft of an idea to use in my magazine. I inserted an image that was from a front cover of a famous edition of vogue designed by Cipe Pineles. I then Put text over it. In reflection, the text over the face was messy and extremely hard to read. So in my final design, I cropped the image in half and wrapped the text around the left side. This was still effective but was a lot easier to read.
